Demand for genetic testing growing in Belarus
MINSK, 30 August (BelTA) – The demand for genetic testing has been steadily increasing in Belarus, Director of the Institute of Genetics and Cytology at the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus Valentina Lemesh told a press conference hosted by BelTA on 30 August.
“The National Center of Genome Biotechnology runs an advanced medical genetics program. This is a very popular area. We have already done more than 100,000 genetic tests and the demand for them has been constantly growing,” said Valentina Lemesh. Genetic testing of athletes is also popular. “We have tested more than 500 elite athletes from 30 national teams for genes responsible for athletic performance. We are developing programs on so-called gene expression. A genetic profile will show the time for the best athletic performance,” the director of the institute said.
The National Center of Genome Technology provides molecular genetics services in the areas such as agriculture, medicine, sports and environment.
