Belarus, Russia to continue defending truth about common history

Belarus and Russia will continue defending the memory of and the truth about common pages of history, BelTA learned from Head of the Belarus President Administration, Chairman of the Republican Council for Historic Policy Igor Sergeyenko.

Igor Sergeyenko noted that Belarus and Russia continue advancing cooperation in the field of socio-humanitarian affairs.

“We don’t simply study joint history. We protect historic memory and truth about the stages that we’ve gone through and are going through together,” he said.

The Republican Council for Historic Policy under the Belarus President Administration and the interagency commission on historic enlightenment under the Russian president signed a memorandum of understanding in Minsk. Igor Sergeyenko believes it will give an additional impulse for Belarus and Russia to advance relations in this field. “Including efforts to immortalize memory about the heroes, who may have been unjustifiably forgotten at some point and are unknown to the general public nowadays,” the official added.

The memorandum provides for setting up a Belarusian-Russian joint commission on history. A Belarusian-Russian expert advisory board on history, which was established during the first Belarusian-Russian forum of historians in Moscow in June 2023, is the working body of the commission on history.

The parties undertake to coordinate efforts to protect historical truth, preserve memory about the common history of Belarus and Russia, which is reflected in textbooks among other things, and promote enlightening, expert, consulting, and humanitarian activities of public importance in the field of history.
