The Vitebsk District Museum of History and Local Lore is developing a project for the inclusion of children with autism and is confident that the implementation of the idea will be in great demand.
- If in 2002 115 children with autism studied in educational institutions of Belarus, then in the last academic year there were already 4392 children. The experience of teaching shows that the earliest possible inclusion of children with autism spectrum disorders in the correctional and educational process allows them to change their behavior and life prospects for the better," said the director of the museum Sergey Zybin.
The advent of audio guides, sign language interpretations, and adaptive descriptions of exhibits will bea significant step forward.
The museum can gain access to a unique perspective on art, history, modernity, and culture, and autistic children can have the opportunity for professional fulfillment and social interaction.
To make being in the museum for children with autism comfortable, there is a lot of work to be done.
"For example, in some cases, it may be necessary to reduce the noise level, adjust the lighting. The implementation of these measures requires cooperation between museum workers, speech pathologists and parents of children with autism. Only by joint efforts can we create a comfortable space where all visitors, regardless of their characteristics, can enjoy the beauty and richness of the museum collection. The director continued.
Guides will undergo special training. It is also planned to make a special section on the museum's website.
The Vitebsk District Museum of History and Local Lore, located in the agro-town of Oktyabrskaya, turned 20 years old in the spring of 2024. On the eve of this anniversary, after a major overhaul, this "time repository" was "rebooted" beyond recognition. The renovation of the museum was a great gift for the 100th anniversary of the Vitebsk region, which was celebrated last summer.
The main fund of the museum has over 17 thousand exhibits. Collections of numismatics, phaleristics, bonistics, printed products, graphics and photographic documents are of great interest.
