Having become the best conductor in the Republic of Belarus, Ilya Lomach dreams of trying himself as a train captain.
Ilya Lomach became the winner of the republican competition “Best in Profession” among passenger workers. The Vitebsk resident competed with guides from all regions of Belarus, who were leaders in the regional stages. As explained by Irina Panfilova, Deputy Head for Ideological Work, Personnel and Social Issues of the Vitebsk Carriage Section , the contestants had to go through two stages. The theoretical one included test questions about the rules of travel on the railway. It was also necessary to find a way out of the non-standard conditional situations that arose. At the practical stage, resolve the proposed problematic circumstances: for example, issue a travel document to a stowaway passenger with a child, taking into account the coefficient and tariffs.
Ilya came to the railway at the age of 18, almost immediately after graduating from Vitebsk gymnasium No. 8. He completed his training directly at the carriage department, where he has been working for the sixth year. As Ilya admits, his dream of working on a train comes from his childhood.
– In the summer, my parents and I often traveled by train to Simferopol. I really enjoyed traveling, watching the landscapes flash by outside the window, watching people. And today nothing has changed. After every trip, I feel drawn to the road again,” says Ilya. – I love the dynamism of my work - constant movement, communication with people.
Ilya travels mainly on the high-speed business class route Vitebsk - Minsk, as well as on international routes Polotsk - Moscow and Minsk - Adler. According to the best guide in Belarus, there are no monotonous trips. Something extraordinary happens in each one, which gives a new experience. Different passengers, situations...
Most often people forget things - and not small bags, but huge suitcases, the interlocutor says. The conductors draw up an inventory of the contents, indicating each item, and report the find to the BZD contact center. And the forgotten luggage remains at the station to wait for its owner.
Ilya intends to develop in his profession and wants to try himself as a train manager. To fulfill this dream, he entered the Belarusian State University of Transport.
In total, more than 470 people work at the Vitebsk carriage site, including service department specialists, rolling stock repairmen, electricians, battery workers, carpenters, as well as 236 conductors (of which only nine are guys). Young people are actively entering this profession. Newcomers learn from experienced colleagues punctuality, discipline, and a high culture of service, because conductors are always in sight and the image of the Belarusian Railway largely depends on them.
In the “Best by Profession” competition, master Mikhail Lipovsky also won in his nomination . Among the leaders are train chief Vitaly Tolpinets and mechanic Vitaly Stalmakov , who took third place, train electrician Ivan Loiko and conductor Ksenia Rudneva (second place).
