Color symbolism in Belarus' culture to be presented at Slavianski Bazaar festival

The exhibition "White, red, black: Color symbolism in traditional culture" will be presented in the Vitebsk Town Hall during the International Festival of Arts Slavianski Bazaar in Vitebsk on 10 July, BelTA learned from the Vitebsk Regional Local Lore Museum.

In today's society there are a lot of color meanings that can tell a lot about the world and people, their status, mood and even profession. For example, people often wear black for mourning, use a pink ribbon for a baby girl and a blue ribbon for a baby boy. These color meanings emerged in the society not so long ago. However, the traditional culture has deep-rooted color symbolism. The exhibition unveils the origins of the white-red-black triad and its use in national cultures, the symbolism of embroidery patterns that were used to decorate clothing and household items of our ancestors, the transformation of beauty standards and introduction of color diversity into traditional culture, the museum informed.

The exhibition will be solemnly unveiled during the festival; however it is already open for the public. It features household items (traditional towels and bedclothes) and clothing items (shirts, headwear, belts) from the collections of the Gomel Palace and Park Ensemble.
