A memorial sign dedicated to the victims of the genocide of the Belarusian people during the Great Patriotic War will be installed in Vitebsk

A typical memorial sign dedicated to the victims of the genocide of the Belarusian people during the Great Patriotic War will be installed on the territory of the memorial complex "5th Regiment" in Vitebsk.

A meeting of the Vitebsk Regional Organizing Committee on the preparation and celebration of the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Belarus from the Nazi invaders and the Victory of the Soviet people in the Great Patriotic War was held.

Chairman of the Vitebsk Regional Executive Committee Alexander Subbotin expressed gratitude to everyone who took part in the preparation for the celebration of the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Belarus from the Nazi invaders and holding memorable solemn events at a high organizational level. Special thanks to the medical and social services that surrounded the veterans of the Great Patriotic War with care and attention. Now the main task is to prepare and celebrate the 80th anniversary of the Great Victory at the same high organizational level, the head of the region emphasized.

At the meeting of the organizing committee, what has been done and is being done to ensure decent living conditions for veterans of the Great Patriotic War, as well as issues related to the improvement of military memorials, burials, memorial sites, perpetuation of the memory of fallen defenders of the Fatherland, patriotic work in educational institutions, labor collectives, and at the place of residence. The concept of festive events in Vitebsk and administrative districts of the region was also discussed.

The Republican Art Expert Council on Monumental and Monumental-Decorative Art approved a standard memorial sign dedicated to the victims of the genocide of the Belarusian people during the Great Patriotic War. According to the results of the competition, the project of Vitebsk residents was selected - sculptor Ivan Kazak and architect Valery Rybakov. The memorial sign created by them will be installed in all regional centers of Belarus. In Vitebsk, it is planned to be installed on the territory of the memorial complex on the site of the former Nazi concentration camp "5th Regiment".

As of February 1, 2025, 110 veterans of the Great Patriotic War and 1583 persons affected by its consequences live in the region.
